Spike Lee directed it, and it tells the story of his NY upbringing, how he decided to become an actor, and his "reconciliation" with his estranged father. It's comedically brilliant and so, so touching. Better than any fictional movie he's ever been in (sorry to say).Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9807422.post-1105445258706963102005-01-11T04:07:00.000-08:002005-01-11T04:07:00.000-08:00Great list. I think he won a Tony for that role on B'way.

Phillip Seymour Hoffman gets an awful lot of critical praise so I assume you mean that he's underappreciated by the viewing public.

And Paul Giamatti may just win an Oscar this year for "Sideways."Kalisahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07681315257203048253noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9807422.post-1105053849368505722005-01-06T15:24:00.000-08:002005-01-06T15:24:00.000-08:00I gotta say, I think Don Cheadle may not be eligib...I gotta say, I think Don Cheadle may not be eligible for this list much longer. If he doesn't get a nomination for Hotel Rwanda, something is seriously wrong.
I saw it the other night, and I think his performance (and the film) should get some much needed attention. Please go see this movie ya'll.

Jeffrey Wright is also one of my faves. He is the definition of a chameleon. He disappears into any role he steps into.

On another note, I'd like to nominate Eddie Murphy for the list. Now, before you laugh and disregard it, let me say this.
The guy has some serious acting skill, but it gets overshadowed by his comedic talent. Take a look at Beverly Hills Cop. He has some good dramatic scenes in there.
And, trust me, anyone who can play like 6 different characters in the same movie (see Coming to America) deserves some love. Give him a serious dramatic role, and he would probably knock it out the park.

dotcomdivaAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9807422.post-1105043220932380712005-01-06T12:27:00.000-08:002005-01-06T12:27:00.000-08:00Excellent, excellent picks. I agree with th epost that says the problem might be that they make it look so effortless, as if they are just playing themselves, that they don't get the recognition they deserve. Don Cheadle is one of my all time favorite actors.

You know how you can see a movie preview, and miss the plot, but notice that so-and-so is in it? When I see Don Cheadle, I think that it must be a good film.a beer sort of girlhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08735615497190061509noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9807422.post-1105036399378312002005-01-06T10:33:00.000-08:002005-01-06T10:33:00.000-08:00Okay so I'm going to start typing a comment and ho...Okay so I'm going to start typing a comment and hopefully by the time I'm done I can think of someone to add to the list.

First off, Ryan Phillipe and Don Cheadle are excellent choices. The Way of the Gun is a great flick and Phillip S. Hoffman was awesome in State and Main.

To me, the reason sometimes actors are underrated is that they make it look so easy, that no one gives them any credit for how great they are.

On the flip side of that, I kinda like when people are underrated because once the media gets a hold of them, you're sick of seeing their face and they can't "disappear" into a role as well as they do.

Just my 2 cents and I can't think of another one to add. I'll mull it over. I will have to bookmark you and visit again and again.

I agree with your assessment of under-appreciated actors. I will add to the list Taye Diggs, but only because of his most recent role as Kevin Hill. Prior to his excellent work in that role, his choice of roles were rather lame and somewhat predictable. This role allows his talent to shine.

Critic - keeping doing what you do.
