Rumble Young Man Rumble!!!!

A couple of days ago I pulled out my verbal violin and played a journalistic tune as depressing as a Marty J Blige interview, expressing how hard it was being a black skateboarder. It was a bit much I admit, but when I think about how hard it has been being a Kobe Bryant fan over the past couple of years, I feel like I should fucking underline my point by having a Billy Holiday song play in the background while you read this. If it is not listening to the brilliant retorts from Kobe haters like "But he's an asshole!" in response to intricate Johnny Cochran defenses of Bryant, the way NBA analysts universally tried their best to push the notion a couple of years ago that Manu Ginobili and Dwayne Wade were better than Kobe, watching a deplorable NBA rundown show on ESPN with Tim Legler and Greg Anthony where they implied that the viewpoint of sports writer Ric Bucher was irrelevant because he "never played basketball" just because he said something complimentary about Bryant. It's horesehit like that, along with Vince Carter's criticizing of Kobe Bryant's 81 point game as a "bad example for kids"(Vince "I never saw a shot I didn't like" Carter?? Shut up dickhead..) that makes this past season even more sweeter for Bryant fans like yours truly.

When I see people eat shit, like Stephen A. Smith damn near giving Kobe a mouth-hug during his interview with him even thought he was one of Bryants most outspoken critics. Hearing douchebags like Tim Legler praise Bryant as the "best in the game" even though he once said that Ginobli was a better player, and the scores of NBA analysts and sports reporters who's flip-flops have them looking like a pair of tits. I feel like Biz Markie on some "Damn it feels good to see people up on it" shit, as my Lakers go to the playoffs. Honestly, they probably won't go far, but here's hoping that they do.

My "Kobe for MVP" argument:

*81 point game, 2,832 points this season(7th all time, all time leading Laker), *35.4 points a game average(best since Jordan in the 86-87 season),
*One of only two players in NBA history to score 35-plus points per game for 13 consecutive games (the other is Wilt Chamberlain)
*One of only three players in NBA history to score 40-plus points per game for 9 consecutive games (the others are Michael Jordan and Wilt Chamberlain)
*One of only three players in NBA history to score 45-plus points per game for 4 consecutive games (the others are Elgin Baylor and Wilt Chamberlain)
*One of only two players in NBA history to average 40-plus points per game for an entire month on two separate occasions (40.6 ppg in February 2003, 43.4 ppg in January 2006)
*Became the first player ever to outscore the opposing team through three quarters since the advent of the 24-second shot clock after scoring 62 points in three quarters of play on December 20, 2005 vs. the Dallas Mavericks
*NBA regular-season leader, free throws made: 2006 (696)

I am with you. I believe Kobe is dragged threw the mud by ESPN analysts only to be praised by them later when he leads his god awful team into the playoffs. Along with you, I am in the Kobe fan club. But, I have to disagree. Kobe doesn't deserve the MVP. What he's done with the Lakers is remarkable. But they are a 7 seed (in the West, granted, but still). As much as I hate to sell out, you have to give the MVP to LeBron. They were out of the playoffs last year, and this year LeBron has willed them to a 4 seed (in the East, granted, but still). I think if you take Kobe off that team, they could still fight for a 7 seed in the west. But if you take LeBron off the Cavs, there's no way they are a 4 seed.

In my opinion, Chauncey Billups is the MVP because he's on a much harder team to put up the numbers he has done. If not Chauncey then Dwayne Wade gets my vote. Wade is a triple double waiting to happen each night and his basketball IQ is phenomenal. Kobe is a straight gunner and doesn't play enough defense and I'm willing to bet a lot of NBA writers might not vote for him because he destroyed the Lakers.

as much as it pains me to say this...*sigh*...kobe deserves it with steve nash a very very very very close second (he lead the suns w/o amare). kobe is in the stonger conference. yeah lebron got the cavs into the playoffs but there are only 3 strong teams in the east in my opinion (det, mia, nj). kobe got the god-awful lakers in the playoffs out west where there are a lot of good teams. but since they want lebron to be the next mj (which he aint), they'll probably give it to him and then throw every game the cavs way so they make it further than they would in the playoffs.

oh and i wouldn't use that 81 pt game as a selling point cause it was against a JV squad up in canada.

i don't remember if it was the 80 point game, or his 60+ point game, but in one of those, although he had all those points, he had no rebounds, no assists, no steals. NOTHING BUT POINTS.

eldgin baylor once scored 57 points, with 25 rebounds, and 10 ast. to me that's way more impressive that kobe's jacking!

lebron for MVP. i give kobe props, he can score. but for the most part, he's nothing more than 10 for 32 every night. i'll take king james, who scores, passes, and rebounds better kobester. there's more to basketball than JUST scoring.

Kobe for MVP all the way. People like to point out the fact that Kobe didn't have any assists in one of his high scoring game. So fucking what? The dude singlehandedly too his team to the playoffs on his back, you can't say that about any other jackass who is in the MVP race..

you could've stopped after the 2nd reason.

I am so not a kobe fan and could care less if he wins this award. He is overrated...

And I am also not a Kobe fan, but overrated? You can't be serious. Do you even watch basketball?

i agree with jameil. most of your reasons were saying the same thing .. kobe scores a lot of points. yeah, it got his team a 7th seed and into the playoffs. but unfortunately MVP stands for Most Valuable Player. Not best player. and the question should be valuable to what? w/o kobe the lakers would go from an OK team to a sorry team. Nash lost how many starters off his team? And in Amare, he lost not only a starter, but one of the top players in the league. And he has Phoenix in the top 5 teams in the whole league this year. He makes everyone around him better, and in the words of Dan Patrick, you couldn't pick Diaw out of a lineup before he got to the Suns. Everybody can score .. granted probly not 81 in a game like kobe ... but I think Nash is the only player in the league averaging a double-double with assists. Nash for MVP. no doubt.

Oh and go back and reread what Vince said about Kobe. He was giving him props if you ask me. He said that he hopes that kids know that it takes a truly great player to do what Kobe did, and he just hopes that every kid doesnt go out there thinking they can do the same thing. You're right about the analysts tho. They are poop.

It stands for most valuable player, that is why Kobe Bryant is deserving. People can peddle that Steve Nash shit all they want, but Nash's team wins more games without him than the Lakers do without Kobe. The man singlehanded took his team to the playoffs, a team that wasn't even considered a playoff team at the beginning of the season. Kobe scored a lot of points, true, but he had to because he has a below avergae supporting cast. Can't say the same thing about Nash, so basically, Kobe should be the motherfucking MVP.

Oh Yeah, HC could have stopped after the second reason, but he had to capitalize his point by putting the rest of Bryants achievements.

Whether the lakers would suck more w/o Kobe or the Suns would suck more w/o Nash is arguable ... but what is fact is that the Suns with Nash are a far better team than the Lakers with Kobe. Without Amare, not many people gave the Suns much of a chance this season either. Lamar Odom is a pretty good player whose talents are not able to be displayed as often because he plays with Kobe. So apart from maybe Odom on the Lakers and Marion on the Suns, both players are playing with a not so great supporting cast. So somethin else please.

Anonymous said...

The problem with that is the award isn't who has the better team, but who is the most valuable to their team along with a great statistical record. Kobe deserves the MVP because anyone who watches the Lakers and who is specifically in the know, knows that Lamar Odom is not consistent and can't be counted on. That settles that one. Also, if you go down the list of supporting casts, Nash has far better players around him.

Oh, and if two words ever proved that someone was an MVP, they would be 1.Kwame 2.Brown

a player who is on a team that is more of a legit contender should be under heavier consideration for mvp in my opinion ... and as far as a great statistical record, if all you care about is putting up points, then kobe's phenomenal. But see me, I prefer recognizing those who do things differently to get noticed. I can't stand the direction the NBA is going in now, and in my mind, putting someone like Nash in the limelight for kids to look up to is a step in the right direction. Basketball's supposed to be a team game, and while Kobe's done amazing things this year, it pisses me off that he may get individual recognition for helping his team when all he really did was make them horrible first (by getting shaq traded, etc.) in order to make himself stand out. And what far better players are you talking about on the Suns? Boris Diaw? Leandro Barbosa? PAT BURKE? Let's see ... Eddie House, James Jones? Brian Grant(Wash up)? Their supporting casts are comparable.

Oh, and if Lamar Odom was playing with Nash, he'd be putting up a double-double every night. But I guess that's beside the point.

As for Lamar Odom getting a double-double if he played with Nash..slow down, the guy is a good player and not GOD. Putting someone like Nash ahead of Kobe would just be because the mass amounts of Kobe-hatred and nothing else. As for the supporting cast, the fact that Nash plays with Nash highlights my argument.(That guy is worth about 5 Laker players) Not only that, the guys surrounding Nash actually contribute and don't disappear like Kobe's teammates. That's why he deserves the MVP.

"the fact that Nash plays with Nash highlights my argument.(That guy is worth about 5 Laker players)"

Thanks for proving my point. as for contribution, it's hard for other players to contribute when someone else is scoring 40, 60, and 80 every night. Odom's not God, but he's not that bad either. Decent talent.

"Thanks for proving my point."

Typos tend to do that. I meant to say .."the fact that Nash plays with Marion highlights my argument.(That guy is worth about 5 Laker players)" Yeah, that's better, and proves my argument.

kinda pointless to argue over this when you all know stern is gonna hand that award over to lebron. not a bball fan but i think stern and espn ride that guy's d*ck waaaaay too much. but thats just my opinion. he can tie his shoe strings on the bench and they make it a top-10 play.

btw, love the site.

Would Kobe have put the Cavs in the 4 seed or higher if he were on that team? Where would Lebron have the Lakers instead of Kobe?

I think Lebron makes his team better, but I'm not sure that Lakers team can get much better than having a dude make 2/3 of their points. But I think Lebron will win it.

nash plays with marion. so what. marion isnt that spectacular of a player. he's good, but him and amare were both there b4 nash got there and their team sucked. so nash is not counting on marion, marion playing well depends on nash. kobe's got odom. he just doesnt make players around him any better.

and you're right anonymous they probly will give it to lebron. o well.

Anonymous said...

Marion is a better player and more consistent than anyone on the lkaers outside Bryant, that's what. Kobe has Odom, but he isn't consistent and can't be counted on. Thus, making Bryant carry an entire team on his back. Plus, he's a point guard who is supposed to set his teammates up, so the "he makes his teammates better" argument is worthless in this case.

Anonymous said...

When I said point guard of course I meant Nash..
