Video of the Day: Gang Starr: "DWYCK"

There are so many reasons why a chubby pre-ejaculating bastard like myself might pick this particular tune on this day. I don't know, it could be the fact that DJ Premier is the best producer of all time in my humble opinion. It could be because Guru, unlike many MC's who seem to have a shelf life, seems to be getting better with age when it comes to his rhyme skills. It could be the way I always dug the quirkiness of Greg Nice's rhyme style and the pimped out delivery of Smooth B. But most of all ladies and Gents, I picked this song because simply, this is what Hip Hop is all about. Every summer, this one included, you can see me traveling down the road with the wind separating my dreadlocks, nodding my head to this classic.

Gangstarr's Step in the Arena is among the original three, i.e. they were one of the first three CD's--literally, that I ever purchased. (The other two--Illmatic, and De La Soul is Dead)

I have since owned every record they have ever made and this song was on my homemade mix tape called "Ms. Khris' Summer Jeep Beats" (and my ass could neither had a car nor could drive). I think it has made almost every summer hip hop mix I have made (and subsequently "lost" to the "damn, where'd you get that from" crowd)

Man, I wish I still had that tape--and a tape player.

When I was in college Greg Nice popped up un-announced during an intermission for a comedy show (a la ODB at the Grammy's). He freestyled then covered some of his hits (a capella). The crowd went nutz man, he rocked the show that night and recieved much love.

Question: What does DWYCK mean?

I saw Gangstarr live somewhere, but I can't remember where...I'm also happy that Paris Hilton isn't in any of these real hip hop videos.

@Sleep...yeah I know. Step in the Arena was three years before this. I guess I should have been more explicit in the fact that i was merely referencing that Gangstarr is one of my favorites...from the beginning of my CD purchasing career.

My bad.

Damn HC, you are killing me with the nostalgia run my friend! I absolutely LOVED this cut, and I agree with you. Guru was slicker as he got older. I have all their albums as well and was just cranking Mass Appeal the other day in my ride. Aahhh, the memories mannn..
